Sponsor bank
Definition
A sponsor bank is the chartered bank that sits behind a software or fintech program so the platform can offer deposits, cards, or acquiring without holding a bank charter. In banking-as-a-service, that usually means the FDIC-insured bank that holds customer deposit accounts (or FBO structures) and is the party examiners treat as the bank. In payments, people also use sponsor bank for the acquiring bank that registers a PayFac or card program. In both cases the bank owns the regulatory relationship. The software company embeds the program. It is not the bank.
This page is who holds the charter. Adjacent terms are Vertical Fintech’s. They are not this page. BIN sponsor (who holds the card-network BIN), banking-as-a-service (the product model), PayFac (who is the registered facilitator), and residuals sit next to this definition.
Why it matters
If you run vertical software and want accounts or wallets inside the product, the first honest question is which bank is on the hook. You do not become a bank by shipping an API. The sponsor bank holds deposits, files the program, and can shut you down. Middleware that talks to many banks is still not the charter. Ask who the customer-facing disclosures name, who holds the FBO or the deposit account, who does KYC at the bank’s standard, and what happens to balances if you change vendors. If a listing says partner banks and not a charter you own, that is the point. Do not invent a faster path by skipping bank diligence. There is no public volume number on this page that makes a sponsor optional.

FAQ
If I embed accounts through a sponsor bank, is my company a bank?
No. The chartered bank is the bank. You are a program manager or software platform on that bank’s program. Disclosures, deposit insurance (where it applies), and examiner attention sit with the bank. Confirm the named bank on the contract and on customer-facing account documents.
Is a sponsor bank the same as a BIN sponsor?
No. A sponsor bank is the chartered bank behind deposits or a program. A BIN sponsor is the party that holds the card-network BIN for issuing. Some banks do both. They are not the same job. BIN sponsor is the next glossary term.
